IS ALKALINE RIGHT FOR YOU?
I have heard all the stories of how hard it is and what to expect walking the 1000 steps so yesterday I finally did it. I was a little worried before-hand because of my lack of lungs these days due to having some chopped out recently, so I knew this was going to be a good test. I went with a good friend of mine who has just come back from the Paralympics, so I figured if she could walk the trail with her walking stick what possible excuse did I have? None!
It was definitely hard, but I made it and am glad I finally did it. Now, every week, I aim to do the steps or something similar to start building my body back up again. Afterwards, we went out for lunch and I found myself explaining my current situation on how I have had to cut out a lot of foods thanks to my body rejecting them (a fun side effect from surgery last year) and for the most part eat alkaline foods.
So today, as I sit here drinking my alkaline smoothie I thought I would explain what alkaline really is and how you can add more alkaline foods into your daily eating.
Our body functions best when we are at pH 7.3 which is a slightly alkaline state. To achieve this we need to be consuming more fruit, veg, nuts, seeds and good fats while limiting meats, dairy and grains. Notice I said limit, not cut out, there’s a difference.
Ideally, we should be eating 80% alkaline and 20% acid based foods, the problem with today’s society is that most of us live in the opposite state due to poor diet and lifestyle choices. A diet high in meats, breads, rices, pastas, eggs and very little vegetables and fruit is what most of the population lives on – does this look like a familiar lifestyle for you and the family?
Our body does have the ability to remove these acidic toxins, but when we constantly bombard ourselves with acid foods at every meal we just don’t get a chance to balance out. The cumulative effect?
Just to name a few. Are these really worth having in your life? How about we flip that around and add some of my favourite alkalizing foods:
Kale Spinach Broccoli
Onion Avocado Celery Cucumber
Lemon/lime Chia seeds Quinoa Cauliflower
Carrot Pumpkin Almond milk Most herbs & spices
Berries Grapefruit Cacao Flax seeds
This is by no means a full list; I can do that another time if enough people want me to. Have a look at this list, how many of these foods do you currently eat on a daily/weekly basis? I can tell you right now, I eat every one of those every single day of the week without fail and I feel 1000% better for it.
I know right now you’re probably thinking that list of foods looks incredibly boring, and it’s certainly not something that you just start doing overnight. Like everything else, it takes time to change your current habits to start giving your body the nutrients it really needs. It took me getting cancer three times and a few kicks across the head (not literally, although that might have sped up the process) to really change my eating habits.
At the end of the day, how long it takes isn’t important. What is if you can stick to it and integrate it into your life.

Start adding in the alkaline foods from the list above and notice how different you feel. Naturally you will start eating less of the acid foods and more and the alkaline foods.
