ARE YOU IF-ING?
Today I wanted to share a simple strategy with you that will help increase energy production, burn more fat, decrease inflammation, lower cholesterol and reduce your blood pressure.
Intermittent fasting (IF) has proven to be a huge benefit when it comes to your overall health. Just look at those few listed above, imagine if you could have all those benefits just by changing when you eat each day – without cutting out the amount of food you have.
Do you sometimes struggle to find the time to eat in the morning before work? Or feel too worn out at night to prepare dinner? This might be a simple solution for you. The way it works is you only eat within an 8-10 hour window each day while the rest of the time you’re fasting. To clarify, during the fasting time you can have coffee/tea, water and even freshly squeezed juice (without pulp) if you need.
So for example, let’s say you’re eating window is 8 hours from 11am – 8pm. Think of the extra time you’re going to give yourself in the morning if you don’t need to sit and have breakfast. You’ll have more time to do other things –prepare all your food for the day, go for a walk, do a quick bit of exercise at home, it will do wonders for your mental state each day.
By the time you reach 11am, your first meal, you simply eat as you would. Ok, maybe you don’t want the usual breakfast at 11am but you can just adjust using the food list you already have from my book to come up with some new creations. Of course eating from 11-7 is just an example, if 7 is too early for dinner then make it 12-8 or if that’s too hard make it 10-8 and slowly work your way up. 16 hours fasting a day is the ideal timeframe in terms of the amount of hormonal benefits you will get.
Another benefit I particularly like from IF is that our growth hormone levels increase. That’s right, your body will build muscle while you’re fasting. Now, before any of the women freak out, it’s not going to mean you’re going to bulk up, far from it and that also depends entirely on your workouts and types of foods and how much food you’re eating on a daily basis. The other point to mention is that muscle burns fat without you doing anything, so it makes sense that your body has more muscle in the first place to keep you lean.
One of the most popular benefits behind eating this way is weight loss. By allowing your body to rest from digestion for 12-14 hours you switch your bodies fuel source over from simply burning some of the food you’re eating to burning stored fat. This is one of the most effortless ways to burn fat, once your body is burning your fat for energy each day, the kilos will fall off.
Finally, digesting food can take up to 80% of your energy stores. So by giving your body 12-14 hours rest from digestion your body has more energy to function and more importantly, heal. Your body is the most complex machine on the planet, and when we give it the right environment, it’s capable of amazing things.
Any time you’re sick, have a cold or injured one of the fastest ways you can heal is to fast. By allowing your body more energy than usual it’s able to go to work and heal whatever might be going on at the time. Even on a daily basis you will see amazing benefits as you saw above, that’s just a few of my favorites, there are a number of other benefits that you will notice over time, I won’t spoil the surprise.
Go ahead and figure out which times suit you and start the habit of sticking to those times, I’d love to hear how it works out for you so leave a comment below or reply to your email.
